Reimagining Rockhampton: Local Government building resilient communities

As the traditional role of local government changes with increased community expectations, decreased funding sources and a rapidly changing world, Rockhampton Regional Council is working to ensure it remains resilient through innovation, vision and collaboration.

Rockhampton has long been known as the Beef Capital of Australia and a city that sporadically peaks during mining booms.  However, a new vision is seeing the Rockhampton Region reimagined. The formation of the Regional Development department and a number of innovative strategies will transform the city and the outdated perceptions of this quintessential Queensland city.

The last year has seen a transforming shift in the way Council addresses the future and is the beginning of a new era for the central Queensland capital.  While the perception of the region is being addressed through strategic rebranding, the physical amenity has not been ignored; a whole of region signage strategy will strengthen the brand identity and provide strategic wayfinding, a CBD revitalisation strategy is underway and major parks are being revitalised to deliver a modern visitor experience.

Rockhampton certainly has a rich and long past, but this is quickly meeting a smart and prosperous future.

For more than 25 years, the Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet) has provided unique information communications technology capabilities to enable collaborations between Australian research and education institutions and their international peer communities.

AARNet’s dedicated national and international network infrastructure interconnects Australia’s research and education institutions with research and education institutions worldwide, the public Internet, resources such as scientific instruments, data stores and high performance computers, and sector-relevant content and service providers. AARNet is a national resource, Australia’s national research and education network (NREN), and is owned and operated by the universities and CSIRO as a not-for-profit company.

AARNet also provides a range of value-added network and collaboration services to support teaching, learning and research. Over one million users—researchers, faculty, staff and students—at institutions across Australia rely on the network. AARNet supports education across the life-long learning spectrum and research across a diverse range of disciplines in the sciences and humanities, including high energy physics, climate science, genomics, radio astronomy and the arts.

In regional Australia, universities play a role as ‘anchor tenants’ for AARNet’s high speed network infrastructure, reducing the impact of distance and the isolation and disadvantage it can bring, by also enabling TAFEs and other regional education and research institutions to reap the benefits of transformative digital technologies. This helps build strong, innovative and sustainable communities around Australia’s great regional institutions.

By providing the tools and services to connect like-minded collaborators in the research and education sector, AARNet plays a vital role in enabling knowledge creation and innovation.
